Social Studies Academic Standards Teach Good and Bad: Pioneer Press Thanks to D.J. Tice for his recent column and open and honest debate of the issues ("Social studies debate reveals honest concerns, unsplittable differences" Nov. 19). I agree that American history, both good and bad, should be taught in the classroom. Knowing the bad can help us to avoid past mistakes; knowing the good can instill a much needed patriotism. But in the end, we are Americans and, as any other culture, have a valid interest in equipping the next generation to carry on our great system of government. If students are not taught to value our country, there will be little reason to defend its existence in the future. Shining above America's faults, it has been a bulwark of freedom to millions. Almost 40 years ago, it welcomed my mother and her family who were fleeing communist Cuba. I will be forever grateful.
