Sample Letter:

The Honorable (Your congressman's name)
United States Senate (House of Representatives)
Washington, DC  20515

Dear Congressman ______________,

As a voter (citizen) and a constituent, I urge you to oppose H.R.1078, the American History and Civics Education Act of 2003.  I also urge you to notify the House leadership that you oppose adding H.R.1078 to the consent calendar.

While H.R.1078 is being promoted as a solution to young people's disturbing lack of knowledge of America's history, founding and operation, H.R.1078 in fact undermines our National Sovereignty, our Constitution and our Bill of Rights.

I would appreciate your considering the following points:

1)      H.R. 1078 is anti-American. Its "key ideas" exclude the most essential principles that set America apart as a beacon to the world. These are clearly stated in the Declaration of Independence, and they include national sovereignty, natural law, self-evident truth and unalienable rights.

2)      Senators did not hear ONE word of testimony opposing this bill before passing it. If H.R.1078 goes on the consent calendar in the House, House members will not hear opposition testimony either.

3)      The Center for Civic Education (CCE) is lobbying for this bill. They are the architects of the National Standards in History and Government and the authors of "We the People" civics textbook. This textbook has stirred intense controversy over its unacceptable treatment of fundamental American principles, such as national
sovereignty and the Bill of Rights.

  4)      Because H.R.1078 excludes the most fundamental principles of our nation, its passage would be an insult to the men and women in the American military and their families who are sacrificing their very lives for our freedom today.

Authorization of this bill would be a serious detriment to our country and to our heritage.

I would appreciate your efforts to defeat H.R.1078, and I look forward to hearing a response from your office.

Sincerely,

Your name
