EdAction April 28, 2000 ALERT! ALERT! ALERT! This is a grassroots message. Please share it with as many people as you can! We have only today through Monday to act! Yesterday afternoon and into the late hours of the evening, the House/Senate Conference Committee on the Profile of Learning met, finally, after almost two weeks. We are working on a description of what happened during those many hours of negotiation, the testimony -- again -- by the paid lobbyists and bureaucrats, and the testimony of MrEdCoPAC. We have so much information for you. But this Action Alert must go out first, because of its urgency. No agreement was reached yesterday. Your calls, letters, e-mails and visits to your legislators are the only reason that the North Star Standard (NSS) is still being seriously considered as an academic achievement option to the Profile of Learning, a knowledge-based system that preserves locally controlled education. If it were not for the active involvement of you, the public across the state, the NSS would have been abandoned long ago. In order to get the NSS across its final hurdle in the legislature, we need you to immediately do the following: 1. Call or e-mail you senator and representative with a personal message. Let them know that you expect them to give you the Northstar Standard as a clean, independent option for Minnesota public schools.
2. Thank the House Conferees for standing firm. Representative Kielkucki
(R) Representative Ness
(R) Representative Otremba
(DFL) For your legislators' phone numbers, call:
3. Check our Legislative hotline number for up-to-the-minute legislative happenings and how you can help. We update the hotline every day the legislature meets. This is vital and only costs pennies! This will be especially helpful for those you know who are not on email! 4. Reproduce this message and give it to people who feel the same way you do. Forward names, addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses of people who would like to be on our mailing list or receive weekly e-mail updates. We must continue to grow! Two years of non-stop work by parents, teachers, students and other citizens across the state have brought us to this point. We are in the final laps of a marathon, and we must not let down on our efforts now, when all of the final agreements are being made. You cannot imagine how important it is for the legislators to know what you expect. Your involvement has been the foundation of all that has occurred. We must be able to rely on each other to improve the course of education in Minnesota. It is now within our grasp! It is up to you. Thank you! |
